Before You Begin

The Rudrashtakam is a prayer to Lord Shiva in eight verses. It comes from the Uttarkand of the Ramcharitmanas by Goswami Tulsidas, and it is one of the most loved Shiva stotras.

  1. Bathe, sit on a clean mat and face east or north. A lamp and a bel leaf or flowers are enough.
  2. Read slowly and clearly. Read the English letters aloud if you do not read Devanagari.
  3. Many people recite it on Mondays, on Pradosh, in the month of Shravan and on Maha Shivratri. It can also be read any day.
  4. Recite it once with full attention. Read the meaning once a week, so the words are not just sounds.
Please remember: A stotra is for devotion and peace of mind. It does not replace medical, legal or other proper help. Ask your guide before you begin any long vow or practice.
