Vastu Basics: Start Here

The ideas behind Vastu in plain words, and a path through the library.

What is Vastu? Vastu Shastra is the Indian science of space. It looks at how a home sits with the directions, the five elements and the path of the sun, and how that supports the people living in it.

The Core Ideas

Vastu Purusha

The ideaMandala

The being on whom the plan of a home rests.

What it means
In the traditional story, a being called Vastu Purusha lies face down on the plot with his head in the North-East and his feet in the South-West. Forty-five devtas hold him in place, and every part of the home belongs to one of them.
Why it matters
It explains the zones. Because the head is North-East, that corner should be light and clean. Because the feet are South-West, that corner should be firm and heavy.
In practice
You do not need to memorise the 45 devtas. Start with the nine-part plan: the eight directions and the centre.

The Golden Rule

BalanceWeight

Light and open in the North-East, heavy and closed in the South-West.

What it means
The North-East takes the first light and flows with water. The South-West is the anchor of the plot and the home.
Why it matters
Most Vastu advice comes back to this one idea: lighter, lower and more open towards the North and East, higher and heavier towards the South and West.
In practice
Put the puja space, water and open lawn in the North-East. Put the master bedroom, wardrobes and the safe in the South-West.
