Entrance, Toilet & Puja Room Vastu by Direction

Where to place your main entrance, toilet and puja room, direction by direction, with simple main-door checks first.

Main Door: Simple Checks Before You Look at Directions

The main door is where the home meets the outside world, so Vastu pays it close attention. These are traditional, practical checks. Your exact entrance zone still depends on how your plot is measured.

✓Good to have

  • The main door is the most prominent door of the home, usually larger than the other doors.
  • It opens inwards, smoothly and without noise, and the door and frame are in good condition.
  • The entrance is clean, well lit and uncluttered, with a clear nameplate.
  • The approach is open, so you can step in easily without dodging obstacles.

✕Better to avoid

  • A pillar, pole, large tree or wall directly in front of the door.
  • Dustbins, shoe piles or broken items stored at the entrance.
  • A toilet or staircase placed right at the entrance.
  • A damaged, cracked or stuck door left unrepaired.

Use these checks together with the pada grid below. For a full reading of your own home, book a Vastu consultation. More habits to review are in Everyday Vastu Checks.

Best & Worst Directions for a Toilet or Bathroom

A wrongly-placed toilet is one of the most common Vastu doshas found in Australian homes. At the level of the 8 main directions, "avoid the north-east and south-west" is only half the story — the safe and unsafe zones for a toilet actually sit inside the finer 16-point compass, so a zone like "south-east" is too broad to call good or bad as a whole. Here's the precise picture:

✓Best & Acceptable Zones

  • West-North-West (WNW) — the most preferred and precise zone for a toilet or bathroom.
  • South-South-East (SSE) — the acceptable secondary zone. Note: this is not the same as a general "south-east" placement — a toilet anywhere else along the SE wall (plain SE or ESE) is not recommended.

✕Avoid

  • North-East (NE) — this sacred corner should stay open, clean and clutter-free.
  • South-West (SW) — can unsettle stability and family relationships.
  • Centre (Brahmasthan) — never place a toilet here.

A few extra details worth getting right: sit facing north or south on the toilet seat, not east or west; keep the door opening and floor drainage toward north or east; and raise the toilet floor slightly rather than sinking it below the rest of the house.

Where to Place Your Puja Room or Temple

Your puja room carries the most weight of any room in a Vastu reading, since it sets the spiritual tone for the whole home.

✓Best Zones

  • North-East (Ishan) — the ideal direction, ruled by Jupiter (गुरु) and Lord Shiva, and the first to catch the morning light. Within this zone, North of North-East (NNE) is the single most auspicious pocket for the idol itself.
  • North or East — solid alternatives when North-East isn't available.

✕Avoid

  • South — strictly avoided for a puja room in classical Vastu.
  • South-West — not recommended for regular deity worship.
  • Under a staircase, in a basement, or sharing a wall with a bathroom.

Idols are best placed facing east or north (so you face north-east or east while praying), set at least a few inches clear of the wall, and never positioned directly facing the front door.
